Switzerland and Qatar are set to meet for the first time in a competitive fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Qatar and Switzerland will lock horns in a Group B encounter at the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Both sides will be eager to begin their World Cup journey on a winning note, knowing that a strong start could prove crucial in the race for a top-two finish and direct qualification to the knockout stage.

Qatar booked their place at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after emerging victorious in their playoff group during the fourth round of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifiers. The 2022 hosts are set to make only their second World Cup appearance and will be determined to improve on their debut campaign by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.

Switzerland, meanwhile, qualified in impressive fashion by topping UEFA Qualifying Group B without suffering a single defeat. The Swiss enter the tournament with high expectations and will be aiming to continue their consistent World Cup performances. Drawn alongside Qatar, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B, Switzerland are widely regarded as one of the favourites to progress to the Round of 32.

Match Prediction

Qatar enter the FIFA World Cup 2026 with renewed ambition after successfully navigating the AFC qualification playoffs, but they face a difficult opening test against a well-organized and experienced Swiss side. The Maroons have improved considerably since their debut World Cup appearance in 2022 and possess several technically gifted players capable of causing problems on the counterattack.

However, Switzerland's consistency at major tournaments gives them a significant advantage heading into this contest. The Swiss remained unbeaten throughout their qualifying campaign and boast a balanced squad featuring quality in defense, midfield, and attack. Their disciplined tactical approach and experience against top-level opposition could prove decisive against a Qatar team still seeking its first World Cup victory.

While Qatar are expected to put up a strong fight and enjoy periods of possession, Switzerland's superior quality and tournament know-how should help them edge this Group B encounter and take an important step toward the knockout stages.

Predicted Score: Qatar 1-2 Switzerland.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's soccer championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026.[1] It will be jointly hosted by sixteen cities—eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. The tournament will be the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted by three nations, and the first to include 48 teams, an expansion from 32 previously.

The United 2026 bid beat a rival bid by Morocco during a final vote at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow. It will be the first World Cup since 2002 to be co-hosted by multiple nations. With its past hosting of the 1970 and 1986 tournaments, Mexico will become the first country to host or co-host the World Cup three times. The United States previously hosted the World Cup in 1994. By contrast, it will be Canada's first time hosting or co-hosting the tournament. The event is returning to its traditional Northern Hemisphere summer schedule after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was uniquely held in November and December.

As the host nations, Canada, Mexico, and the United States all automatically qualified. Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will all make their World Cup debuts. Argentina is the defending champion, having won its third World Cup title in 2022.

Preparations for the tournament have drawn controversy, particularly over United States immigration and visa policies affecting qualified teams and their fans, Iran's participation during the 2026 Iran war, and FIFA's use of dynamic ticket pricing.
