Can the Crescent Stars extend their unbeaten run against the Socceroos after 22 years?

Perched along the stunning west coast of Canada, BC Place Stadium in Vancouver is set to host an exciting Group D encounter in the opening week of the FIFA World Cup 2026, as 2002 World Cup bronze medallists Türkiye take on former Asian champions Australia.

Australia arrive at the tournament with a youthful and ambitious squad. The Socceroos will feature 17 World Cup debutants, while eight members of the squad are aged 23 or younger. Having qualified for each of the last five FIFA World Cups, Australia have established themselves as regular participants on football’s biggest stage. At the 2022 World Cup, they captured global attention by defeating Denmark to reach the Round of 16 before pushing eventual champions Argentina in a spirited knockout clash.

The team is guided by Tony Popovic, a highly respected coach who previously won the AFC Champions League with Western Sydney Wanderers and the Australia Cup with Melbourne Victory. Since taking charge of the national team in September 2024, Popovic has overseen a promising period, winning 10 of his first 18 matches. Despite their recent progress, advancing from Group D will be a significant challenge, with formidable opponents such as Türkiye, Paraguay, and the United States standing in their way.

Türkiye, meanwhile, return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since their memorable campaign in 2002. The Crescent Stars stunned the footballing world in South Korea and Japan by defeating the hosts and Senegal en route to a historic semi-final appearance before overcoming South Korea to secure the bronze medal. That remarkable run remains one of the greatest achievements in Turkish football history.

Since then, however, Türkiye have endured a long absence from the global stage, making their qualification for the 2026 World Cup a highly anticipated return after a 24-year wait. Their resurgence has been evident in recent years, highlighted by an impressive run to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024. Boasting one of the most exciting young squads in international football, Türkiye are widely viewed as strong contenders to top Group D.

Leading the team is experienced Italian manager Vincenzo Montella, whose coaching résumé includes spells with Fiorentina, AC Milan, Sevilla, and AS Roma. Under his guidance, the Crescent Stars have developed into a dynamic and fearless side capable of troubling any opponent, setting the stage for a fascinating opening clash against Australia.

Match Prediction

Although Australia have been regular participants at the FIFA World Cup over the past two decades, Türkiye appear to hold the advantage heading into this contest. The Crescent Stars boast a well-balanced squad filled with quality and youthful talent, while their recent run of form has been particularly impressive. Australia are renowned for their defensive discipline and resilience, which could make scoring opportunities hard to come by. Nevertheless, Türkiye's superior attacking options and momentum give them the edge in what is expected to be a tightly contested affair.

Prediction: Australia 0-1 Türkiye

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's soccer championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026.[1] It will be jointly hosted by sixteen cities—eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. The tournament will be the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted by three nations, and the first to include 48 teams, an expansion from 32 previously.

The United 2026 bid beat a rival bid by Morocco during a final vote at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow. It will be the first World Cup since 2002 to be co-hosted by multiple nations. With its past hosting of the 1970 and 1986 tournaments, Mexico will become the first country to host or co-host the World Cup three times. The United States previously hosted the World Cup in 1994. By contrast, it will be Canada's first time hosting or co-hosting the tournament. The event is returning to its traditional Northern Hemisphere summer schedule after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was uniquely held in November and December.

As the host nations, Canada, Mexico, and the United States all automatically qualified. Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will all make their World Cup debuts. Argentina is the defending champion, having won its third World Cup title in 2022.

Preparations for the tournament have drawn controversy, particularly over United States immigration and visa policies affecting qualified teams and their fans, Iran's participation during the 2026 Iran war, and FIFA's use of dynamic ticket pricing.
